The Breast Advocacy program at Breast Imaging of Oklahoma is composed of three parts.

The first part is a library with reference material on breast cancer and breast cancer risk that women and their family members can check out. Brochures are also available to keep and an experience advanced practice nurse is on hand to answer questions or assist in finding specific information.

A second part of our program is the availability either in person or by phone to talk to an experienced nurse regarding decisions about surgery, reconstruction, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, breast cancer risk and genetic counseling and testing. These nurses make contact with all newly diagnosed patients and are available for the patients and their family members to clarify questions and address concerns regarding their diagnosis.

A third part involves breast cancer survivors. A network of survivors at Breast Imaging of Oklahoma have formed support groups. These groups are led by a breast cancer survivor who is also a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist. Members of these groups are available for one-on-one visits by phone or in person regarding breast cancer choices and issues related to coping with the diagnosis of breast cancer.

There are two groups available, one for breast cancer survivors under age 40, and another for women over 40.

Young Survival Coalition in Oklahoma City
More and more women are being diagnosed with breast cancer at younger ages. Some of the life issues are different for a 30-year-old woman than for a woman who is 68.

The questions are not so much about their health, but more about their identity. Uncertainty involves body image, pain management, sexuality, reconstruction, reproduction, how their partner views them and how to talk to young children about the disease.

Melissa Craft ,PHD., R.N., M.S., Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse with Breast Imaging of Oklahoma facilitates  questions discussed openly in support groups.
