Breast Needle Localization

What is Needle Localization?

Needle localization is a diagnostic procedure by which a special needle with a wire is inserted into the breast to identify the precise area of abnormal tissue that the surgeon will be removing. This wire/needle will be inserted using mammography (x-ray), ultrasound or MRI guidance.

How to Prepare for Needle Localization:

  1.  Please wear a 2 piece outfit with a loose-fitting removable top. We will provide you with a cover-up to wear during your procedure.
  2. Wear little or no body powder or perfume to your appointment. Deodorant is fine in moderation.
  3. Be sure to follow your surgeon's instructions prior to this procedure.

How Much Time to Allow for your Visit for Needle Localization: About an hour

What to Expect During Needle Localization:

After routine cleaning of the skin, local anesthesia is administered and a radiologist will insert a wire/needle using guidance by mammogram, ultrasound or MRI. Regardless of the method of guidance post-procedure mammogram images will be taken with the wire/needle in place to confirm the location. You will leave Breast Imaging of Oklahoma with the needle and/or wire in your breast and proceed immediately to your surgical appointment

When will I get my results from Needle Localization?:

Because a Needle Localization is no a diagnostic procedure there are not results per se. However, you physician and/or surgeon will receive a report detailing the procedure within a few days of your appointment. The pathology resport from the tissue which is excised during surgery will be given by your surgeon.
