Kelly McDonough, M.D.
“For me, what I do is a ministry and not just a job. It has to do with allaying a woman’s fears, giving her the very best guidance and care that I can offer, and helping her have hope once again.”
Dr. Kelly McDonough is a native of Oklahoma City, the daughter of the senior minister at Church of the Servant. When she finished medical school, she chose radiology and then narrowed her specialty down to the field of mammography and breast imaging. “When a friend of mine from church had a recurrence of her breast cancer, somehow I began to see how this particular field could give me the opportunity to have that personal relationship with my patients and even to help them through a most difficult time in their lives,” she said. “People often think of radiologists as specialists who work mostly alone reading x-rays, MRI’s, and mammograms. But I wanted to be a different kind of radiologist because I value patient interaction so much. I wanted to have a one-on-one relationship with my patients, because they are persons to me and not just cases to be diagnosed. “
Dr. McDonough is very careful in evaluating every patient’s images, doing her best to catch even the smallest detail and paying close attention to it, because being caring and being careful are almost one and the same thing in breast imaging. “If we can catch a tiny breast cancer before it has a chance to begin spreading, we will give that patient the very best chance of all to be a cancer survivor and to resume living her normal life.”
Dr. Kelly McDonough is a fellowship-trained breast imaging radiologist who did her advanced training at the Susan G. Komen Breast Center at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma in microbiology and chemistry and then completed her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City graduating in the top 10% of her class and was part of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. She did her diagnostic radiology residency at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, and after completing her breast imaging fellowship, came back to be the medical director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at Integris Baptist. In the year 2000, she joined Dr. Debra Mitchell and Dr. Carol Sheldon at the University of Oklahoma Breast Institute before founding Breast Imaging of Oklahoma in early 2003 with Dr. Mitchell.
Dr. McDonough and her husband live in Edmond with their two children.
